How to Make Stuffed Mushrooms
- Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking dish with parchment paper or foil. Clean the mushrooms using a damp cloth. Remove the stems and scoop out the inside of each mushroom cap. Chop the stems into small pieces and set aside.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the chopped mushroom stems until the water evaporates. Add garlic and cook for another 30 seconds to a minute. Let it cool on a plate.
- In a bowl, mix Parmesan cheese, cream cheese, black pepper, salt, green onion, and the cooled mushroom mixture. Spoon this filling into each mushroom, making a small mound on top. Place the mushrooms on the baking sheet and sprinkle with grated mozzarella cheese.
- Bake for 15-17 minutes until the mushrooms are golden brown and tender. Serve with green onions!
How to Know Stuffed Mushrooms Are Done?
To avoid limp and mushy mushrooms, be careful not to overcook.
The mushrooms are done when they are slightly browned, feel soft when gently squeezed, and are beginning to release moisture.
There may be a bit of water at the base of the mushroom.
How to Clean Mushrooms?
When washed, mushrooms can absorb the water causing the texture to be soggy and watery.
To prevent this, clean them by wiping the outside with a damp paper towel to remove dirt.
Storing, Reheating and Freezing Stuffed Mushrooms
Learn the best tips for storing, reheating, and freezing your stuffed mushrooms to keep them delicious and fresh.

Reheat them in the microwave or a 350°F oven.
How Do You Reheat Stuffed Mushrooms?

You can also use a microwave for a few minutes.
How Long Do Cooked Stuffed Mushrooms Last in the Fridge?
Cooked stuffed mushrooms last about 3-4 days in the fridge.
Can You Eat Stuffed Mushrooms the Next Day?
Yes, you can eat stuffed mushrooms the next day. Keep them in the fridge and reheat before eating.
Stuffed Mushrooms Recipe Tips
🍄 Bigger mushrooms = more filling. Need I say more? Use the biggest cremini mushrooms you can find for stuffed mushrooms. They’ll hold more of the breadcrumb mixture than small ones will, and it will be easier to fill them.
🔪 Finely chop the filling ingredients. The best stuffed mushrooms have a little of everything in each bite. Chop your filling ingredients into small pieces that will evenly incorporate with one another. Also grate the cheese on a Microplane zester or the smallest holes of a box grater.
🧂 Don’t forget to season the mushrooms. It’s easy to skip this step! Before you load up the mushroom caps with the filling, drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle them with salt. This simple step adds so much flavor to this stuffed mushroom recipe.
🍛 Make them a meal! These stuffed mushrooms are an excellent party appetizer, but on occasion, we’ll eat them for dinner too. Serve them with a big scoop of yellow rice or quinoa!
🌮 Don’t throw away the mushroom stems! Finely chop stems and add them to ground beef or chicken when making tacos, chili, or meatballs for added fiber and flavor.
😩 Prevent soggy stuffed mushrooms - To keep stuffed mushrooms from getting soggy, use firm, fresh mushrooms and pre-bake the caps briefly before stuffing. Also, drain any moisture-releasing ingredients like vegetables well before mixing them into the filling.
Why Are My Stuffed Mushrooms Dry?
Your stuffed mushrooms may be dry if they are overcooked. Also, make sure to add enough filling to keep them moist.
How to Serve Stuffed Mushrooms
We love them as appetizers but they also work great as a side dish or even a main course (mushrooms have a great meaty quality to them!).
Stuffed mushrooms pair well with:
- A Fresh Salad – try Caprese Salad, or Caesar Salad.
- Any Protein – Pan-Seared Steak, Pork Chops, Roast Chicken or Pork Tenderloin.
- Vegetable Sides – Roasted Cauliflower or Au Gratin Potatoes.
- For a Holiday feast with Prime Rib, Turkey, or Baked Ham.
Follow our Make-Ahead section below for suggestions on how to serve stuffed mushrooms at a party.
Then, simply arrange mushrooms on a festive serving plate or even a deviled egg platter.
How To Make-Ahead Stuffed Mushroom Appetizer
Make party prep easier by making stuffed mushrooms ahead of time.
You can even bring the mushrooms in a baking dish to cook when you arrive at the potluck or party.
Here are some Make-Ahead options:
- Prep Ahead – make the filling and store it in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 days before filling and baking.
- Assemble Ahead – stuff the mushrooms, cover, and refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- To Refrigerate Leftover Stuffed Mushrooms - store cooked and cooled mushrooms in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days.
- To Reheat Stuffed Mushrooms - heat in an oven or air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 until warmed through, or heat in the microwave (for 30 seconds at a time) until warmed through.
How to Keep Mushrooms Warm for Serving
When it comes to serving hot appetizers or hors d'oeuvre it can be challenging to keep them warm, but I have used a few tricks over the years and hopefully they can help you as well.
✅ Use a chafing dish. If you have these they are a great way to keep hot foods hot, but most of us don’t have chafing dishes laying around the house. Check out these easy disposable chafing dish options.
✅ Heat a block of rock salt. Heat a block of rock salt in the oven and place the mushrooms on top before serving. You can find these blocks at specialty stores or online, or use crushed rock salt spread on a sheet pan (keeping the pieces large). This method works well for grilled or baked oysters too. If using crushed salt, cover it with a thin cloth or piece of foil to avoid any pieces sticking to the mushrooms when served.
✅ Make good use of your pizza stone or cast iron griddle. These items stay hot for a long time. Put a towel on the handle to prevent accidental burns, then use your pizza stone or griddle as a warm serving tray.
