What were the boundaries of their agency? In this lecture, he will present some work from a book project co-authored with Rolf Tybout on the world of the Greek funerary epigrams from the Greek East in the Hellenistic and Roman period. Epigrams consist of short verse inscriptions. Hundreds of such commemorative poems survive from all over the Greek world, the majority dating to the Roman period. In the ancient world funerary texts were much more relational and communicative than nowadays: as people entered or left the city, they encountered along the road series of texts and monuments almost literally spoke to them and made claims about the deceased and commemorators. Funerary epigrams can therefore be read as a form of self-representation that take as their basis major life events of the individual that was commemorated; they offer patterned glimpses of the ways people constructed their world and positioned themselves in urban society. Although the use of versified texts was hardly confined to the local elites, they certainly displayed an upward bias. They depict a civic world in which commemorators demarcated the identity of the deceased through a display of cultural competence. Somewhat remarkably however, a number of these epigrams are made for and by slaves. In this lecture, Dr. Tacoma will discuss how the status ambiguities between slaves and masters were negotiated in the texts, and what that can tell us about the agency of the enslaved persons in the cities that dotted the Greek East.

Some prominent elements discussed by scholars of art in this famous Cimabue- the Byzantine theme of Ὁδηγήτρια - the Blessed Virgin Mary "pointing" to Her Son as the Divine Savior. This is combined with the Latin theme of Sedes Sapientia - the Virgin Mary as Enthroned Wisdom. Though Cimabue is chronologically close to the frontier of the Florentine Renaissance, most of the notable aspects of this painting strike one as more typically medieval in its symbolic rather than naturalistic space. The use of Gold Leaf to represent the sky (different from the blue of Giotto), shows the REPRESENTATION of the heavenly sphere is more important than trying to depict the sky as it is. The Christ Child is clearly adult-like and not at all like a real baby - perhaps to accent His place as the Eternal Word at the center of the cosmos and history. The use of perspective is limited. And the proportions are not at all lifelike, especially if we extend our eyes to the prophets of Israel below the throne of Mary.

The lord of Kashi is Mahadev. In Kashi, Mahadev is seated in the form of Vishwanath i.e. the lord of the world. If there is Avimukteshwar here, then there is also the continuity of Ma Ganga. After the completion of the construction of Kashi Corridor, the eyes of the whole world were on Kashi. There are as many stories as there are beliefs of Kashi Vishwanath. 🙏 Somewhere the story of the establishment of this Shivling is told by Shakti, and somewhere it is said to be established by Vishnu. Not only this, somewhere in the dream Baba’s vision and desire to settle in Kashi is also said. Kashi Vishwanath is the most popular name of Baba. Baba’s name in the scriptures is Vishwaswanath.
