I’m hoping this thread gets a fresh post often enough to keep it going as a little local on-line Miata Club of sorts. - - - The local area has long had an identity crisis, it’s sometimes know as: Hampton Roads, Tidewater, and the Norfolk/Virginia Beach metro area . I consider it to be to be the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport News. I’d also like to see post about any good daytrips from here - - - I’ll start it off with another post shortly, unless you beat me to it - - - Come on local Miata Fans.

On the spur of moment yesterday the wife and I decided to go drive the Colonial Parkway http://www.nps.gov/colo/index.htm . It is not a road for spirited driving, no Miata curves, and because the road is part of the National Park Service I would suspect a ticket would be more hassle and expense than usual. It is a beautiful drive through the woods on a wide well maintained concrete road. It was a very calming, peaceful stretch of road. It’s kind of ironic how peaceful it felt as one end is where the early Colonist clashed with the Native Americans and the other end is where the later Colonist (and the French) had the final battle with the British for the independence of the United States.

We couldn’t drive the whole Parkway. They are detouring traffic around a big chunk of the road between Williamsburg and Jamestown because of a boating accident that damaged a support piling on the Powhatan Creek bridge. I will do the drive again once the bridge gets re-opened. We got the annual membership passes to the visitors center for Yorktown and Jamestown ($35 ea), so we plan on returning several times and exploring the areas at both ends of the road. Unfortunately the passes are no good at the ½ way point (Williamsburg).

We were very surprised how nice the beach area at the Yorktown end is. The biggest disappointment of the day was dinner at Jamestown Pie Company. I love finding Hole-in-the-Wall type places with good food. The sign fooled us into thinking it was a sit-down restaurant, it was take-out only, but they had picnic tables and it was a nice day. The desert pies might be good; but, I tried the pizza and the wife tried chicken-pot-pie and it was almost inedible. Desert maybe, for dinner don’t go there.

If you a have a free afternoon and feel like going for a peaceful drive this is a good trip.

Just got my second pair of shoes after 25K miles. Stuck with Bridgstone Potenza, but went with 215/45/17 instead of 205's that were not readily available.

I delayed getting an alignment after installing the Mazdaspeed PRHT sport springs and prematurely wore the inside edge of original tires.

Many places were not willing or did not feel comfortable with doing a custom alignment.

Found the best place - Burts Alignment, 305 Rose Marie Ave right off Virginia Beach Blvd between Witchduck and Independence. 757 499 2828

They test drove prior to check, allowed me in the shop to witness the whole proceedure to ensure I was fully satisfied with the tolerances.

Test drive after the real wheels completed and then anoter drive after the front with a follow on tweek.

Mike, the mechanic was very knowlwdgable on the NC Miata. This is the only place I'll every take a car for alignment. They only take appointments, closed on weekends, $140 for 4 wheels. They use vintage John Bean alignment machines ( non computerized).

I know where that road is. I can’t drive by “Rose Marie” without thinking “and Morey Amsterdam”. I watched way too many reruns of The Dick Van Dyke Show as a child.

Good to know there is still an old school mechanic around that understands cars well enough he doesn’t have to depend on a computer to tell him what to do. Technology can be a good thing though; I’m going to post this question in “Suspension, Handling & Brakes” just out of curiosity: “Who would you trust for an alignment, an experienced mechanic with vintage John Bean alignment machines or a dealer or chain store with the latest tech but mechanics you never talk with?” I really don’t know, this could be interesting.

Thanks for posting, see you on the road.

This event http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=348726 happening Saturday October 3, 2009 on the Eastern Shore sounds like a lot of fun; but, it may be a little to much to do in one day for some folks. Anyone interested in meeting somewhere and caravanning up?

Sounds Goods – Pick a date, time, and meeting place and maybe a few more folks would like to join us. I’d think 10am or so would be a good start time. Work is slow for me now, I’m getting weekends and holidays off, this weekend I’m planning on the M.O.O.D. event, Sat the 10th a company pig picking, otherwise my weekends are open. Columbus Day may be a good pick but it seems like a lot of people don’t get that day anymore.

If this sounds like more trouble than you wanted; I will PM you next time the wife and I are coming up to explore the Yorktown/Jamestown parks and maybe we can run the roads after. That will likely be spur of the moment and not really something I can plan.

My wife and I went on the inaugural M.O.O.D. Bay-to-the-Beach drive Saturday. If there is a 2nd annual M.O.O.D. Bay-to-the-Beach drive next year I highly recommend it. It was a 340 mile day for us; right on the edge of being too much for one day; next time we may stay the night in Ocean City, MD.

Miata owners of Delmarva (M.O.O.D) are a nice group of folks and collectively have a great collection of Miata’s spanning all three generations. This event was a fund raiser for a good cause, “Home of the Brave”, a homeless veteran’s charity

We left Virginia Beach about 7:30 and drove straight though to the meeting place, the Crisfield, MD ferry dock, arriving right at the 10AM meeting time. After meeting the group and admiring the cars a bit we headed out. We took a meandering scenic route on rural two lane reads, a nice drive with a couple of nice curves along the way but mostly pretty sedate. We stopped in Berlin MD for lunch, not really sure what time it was. Berlin is a relaxing little town with a few Antique Shops, B&B’s, Small restaurants and assorted other stores. After a nice lunch and stretching our legs we met back up for the run to Ocean City. There was some back road driving but then we hit a four lane. I don’t know if our time was getting short or if it’s the only way in to OC. We met up with a police escort who led our parade of Miata’s down the Ocean City Boardwalk. I felt like a bit of a ham and a show-off, but it was fun. The reaction of some of the children still has me grinning. The group split up after that and we had the long run back home, got back a little before 8PM. It was a fun day!

Welcome  Sounds like you got a good deal on a great car.

Maybe I should have given Caviler Mazda a shot; but, I was still holding a grudge over a situation at Caviler Ford years ago and refused to set foot on their lot. They are so close to my house, I decided my grudge was only hurting me and gave Caviler’s service department a shot. Not really happy with them; I’m undecided if I’ll go back or drive past them to Hall next time my car see’s a service bay. I’m not happy with Hall’s sales department but I haven’t tried service with them. I bought my car from Pearson Mazda in Richmond. I’m very happy with Pearson; just wish they were 100 miles closer.

The local club is Miata Nuts of Greater Hampton Roads they do not have a web site as far as I know . A contact email address is posted on the forum club page http://www.miata.net/clubs/midlantic.html . I haven’t contacted them. I don’t know why. When I was trying to make a deal with Hall, the salesman mentioned the club has meetings at the dealership but I don’t know when. If you join up please post about it here. I my follow your lead and join too.

Hall Auto, all flavors is on my Do-Not-Buy list. Shady sales, and the body shop managers are condescending jerks.

I got mistreated (Screwed?) back in the '80s at Hall Honda. I gave them a second shot in 2005 at Stateline Honda and they tried to deliver a Civic I had not agreed to purchase -- so with check written, and paperwork ready, car sitting outside cleaned and ready for delivery, I walked. Bought the same Civic for $500 less at Checkered Flag the next week. FWIW, I grew up on a used car lot -- one thing I truly enjoy is watching sales staff squirm in response to my offers, and I always make sure I get the little extras -- touch-up paint and floormats for sure.

I bought a '04 F150 FX4 back in Sep 2003 -- right after they came out. Got a good deal, and really liked the sales team. The Service manager is a jerk, plain and simple. I won't do business with their Ford Service.

The Mazda sales team was *great*. I took delivery late, so parts/service was closed. We'll reserve judgement on that part later.

Thanks for the email -- I'll be a frequent visitor here.

Hey everyone, I'm new to the area but have had my '92 for about 4 1/2 years now. I'd love to meet up and gather any technical advice/help from anyone that has some to help. My poor baby is in dire need of some TLC, and I feel bad for having let her go for so long. But I still drive her pretty hard sometimes, just because I know she loves it so much. ;)

JohnnyZoomNow

6th October 2009, 18:06

Welcome to the area. I’ve only had my Miata since March so I’m a little short on the tech advice. What’s broke, or do you just need to get caught up on the routine maintenance and do a good detailing?

psunakedboy

6th October 2009, 19:33

Well I've got a laundry list of things that need take care of on the car. She needs a new top, some rust issues taken care of, and I've got a crazy idle issue going on where the car will nearly stall and the idle will bob when I disengage the clutch (I believe I have an idle speed control valve issue).....and of course she could always use a quality detailing!

JohnnyZoomNow

7th October 2009, 11:02

Well, priority wise, I’d say #1 should be stopping the spread of rust. #2 should be fixing the Idle (do NA’s have an OBD port?). #3 Replace the top, if it’s leaking, if it’s just a cosmetic problem, it will wait. #4 Repairing the rust damage. Other than that, I don’t know what to say. Are you a DIY guy, or will you be looking for someplace to have the work done?

psunakedboy

7th October 2009, 17:01

Well I'm a bit of a DIY guy, but I don't have much experience with any of my issues. Also, I live in an apartment, so don't have the tools or space to work on her here. I could go to the facilities on base to do the work, but that could limit some that might want to check out and learn/help/point and laugh at me. ;)

RITHGOLL

8th October 2009, 08:32

Eric,
For your idle speed control problems. check this out in the garage section
www.miata.net/garage/isc.html, this should be helpful in finding/fixing your problem. I had a similar problem with my 92, and the cure was just adjusting the idle speed control valve. You may have more issues, but this information should be helpful.

Eric, Do you want to meet up Sunday or Columbus day to work on it? I could possibly do tomorrow, not sure if I will be off work yet. I have a single car garage and a fairly decent set of tools. Not sure how much help I’ll be, but the learn/point & laugh part sounds good and I’ll do what I can.

I went to Pick-n-Pull today. It’s at 100 Sykes Avenue. There was no Miata in the yard; but, I didn’t really think there would be. There is another thread running about adding an OEM spoiler off other cars; I was spoiler hunting but had no luck. It seemed very clean and organized for a junkyard. They charged $1 to go in the yard and I had to sign a liability release form. The cars were all in nice straight rows on a level gravel lot. They were doing a lot of business today; lots of folks were busy pulling parts off the cars and there was a short line at the cash registers on the way out. I struck out today; but, I might look again in a few months after the inventory has cycled.

JohnnyZoomNow

4th November 2009, 10:10

I’m working on my spoiler install. It’s time to get it painted.

I checked out Squidly’s in Chesapeake and I may wish I had went with him before its over. The shop looked rough and dirty but the spray booth looked good. I was impressed by the owner/manager (I’m assuming he is the owner) he really seemed to know his stuff. He said he does not do mid level work, too many shops are in that business. He does cheap, quick, high-volume work for used car lots and other customers that just want a coat of paint on a cheap car. He also does high end custom work for folks that want it right and are willing to pay for it. I wasn’t willing to pay for it; $80 for flat black or $220 for yellow on the spoiler.

The left the spoiler at the Macco in Chesapeake yesterday. They wanted $100 for flat black, $150 for yellow, I picked yellow. I’ll update when I get it back.

JohnnyZoomNow

10th November 2009, 15:58

They were fast, dropped the spoiler off Tuesday the 3rd and got it back Thursday the 5th. The front office folks were efficient and nice and I guess the price was OK. I’m happy but not thrilled with the job. The color match was very good, it looks maybe a touch dark in some light but I really don’t think anyone could have got it much closer. One leg has a small spot where the paint was put on too thick, more of a sag than a run. The bottom edge of the same leg got a small chip, I didn’t notice it at the shop. Maybe I chipped it on the way home. The color coat is too thin in a couple of places on the bottom, but you would need a mirror to see it now that it’s installed. I guess I got what I paid for. I posted pics of the installed spoiler here: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showpost.php?p=4178140&postcount=103. I might go back to them again the next time I want something painted; but, I will look around a little more first.

10th November 2009, 16:32

That looks great!

How hard was the wiring part?

JohnnyZoomNow

10th November 2009, 16:38

The wiring was about as easy as it gets. Two leads to route and solder. I’m a electronics tech., for me drilling holes in the trunk lid was the scary part.

Jenro’s Coffee House at Haygood shopping center advertises a car enthusiast gathering called “Saturday Night Fever” starting at 3pm every Saturday afternoon. All makes and models welcome.

I’ve stopped by several times in the past. When the weather is good there are well over 50 cars. The worst day I bothered to go there was about a dozen. On a good day you will see some restored classics, some ‘60’s muscle, sports cars, maybe a truck or two. I haven’t seen another Miata there yet. I have seen a Sky, a Solstice Coupe, and a MR2.

The weather is looking good for tomorrow; I’ll likely be at Jenro’s from 3 until it starts getting cold.

I tried out All Aspects Motorsports to test my car on their dynojet. Why I wanted my car dyno’d is in this thread: http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=363982 . All Aspects is a performance garage. The manager (owner?) Keenan is a road racer and ran the dyno himself. The price seemed reasonable to me at $55 for three pulls. They had cars in both service bays (Mustang and Impreza) while they were dyno testing mine. I recommend them for dyno testing and if I wanted to do a mod to the car but didn’t want to do it myself, I would give them a shot. They are just north of the Great Bridge bridge.

Welcome  Good Enough and speedymatt,

speedy,
Funny you mentioned the pungo auto-x. I went out there for the first time last Sunday (4/11) as a spectator, it was fun to watch but it looked like it would be more fun to drive. It’s a SSCA event and looked well organized. The venue was OK it may be great but the only thing I have to compare it to is ACU-4 where TSCC holds autocross events. The slab of concrete at ACU-4 is much larger and looks to be in better condition. I guess we are very lucky to have two groups organizing autocross events locally. Here is a link to the local SSCA website if you want to know more. http://www.odr-scca.org/

TSCC (Tidewater Sports Car Club) is doing a beginners Autocross School this Saturday and I will be on of the students. This Sunday will be the monthly race. I’ll be in the third heat, car 86. If you are interested in autocross and haven’t been to ACU-4 you should check it out. http://www.tidewatersportscarclub.com/ . Three of the thirty spots are still open for Saturdays school.

The Cars and Coffee thing I posted about a couple of post up was fun. I plan to make it to as many of these things as I can.

speedymatt

14th April 2010, 11:24

Welcome

I was a member of the odr-scca a few years back, before the whole airsoft leasing the site thing. the slab out there has seen better days but it has been there for 40 plus years, and isn't an active site but the group does the best it can. were there still food vendors there? and how was the spectator area? i'm planning on bringing the wife and kids out.

the ACU-4 site is still an active hovercraft ramp so maintenace is key there. I've never been to the TSCC events but i'll be looking into it.
just for grins heres some of my past cars working out in pungo.

Nice pics, I still looks pretty much like that.

There was a vender, didn't really check out the menu I just had a co*ke.

The spectator area had an aluminum bleacher that was pretty full during the heats. A few folks were sitting in lawn chairs and a couple people pushing baby strollers. Several kids were playing on a large pile of dirt behind the bleachers, they looked like they were having almost as much fun as the dads in the cars. You had to cut though a rough area to get to the spectator area. It was fine Sunday but I don’t think I’d want to do it after a good rain storm.

fastrax203

16th April 2010, 14:21

IRTB = Individual Runner Throttle Bodies. Basically one throttle body per cylinder. I had the black NA turbo (only one at the event), I was in the second heat. I would have gone but I'm pretty tired from work/tuning the car for non-boost operation etc.

It will still be the first Saturday of every month.... following Saturday rain date. 8am to 10am.

The TSCC website is not the easiest to navigate, and the gallery full of pics from 2006 makes you think they're not very active. I can't get to certain pages unless I register, and registration is temporarily disabled, which also makes you think they're not very active.

As a complete newb, should I register to drive, or just watch the first time? Should I join SCCA?

Welcome to the forum TenEchs. I’ll be #90 at next ACU-4 event; see you there.

JohnnyZoomNow

I’m still new myself, but I think you will be fine to register and drive without visiting first. Part of it is working the event. You work one heat, drive one heat, and have one heat free. I like to work the first, goof-off the second, and drive the third. The heat you drive in determines the heat you will work. The novice information on the web site does a good job of explaining it.

As far as the website being hard to navigate, remember it is an all volunteer club. These folks would rather be playing with their cars than updating the site.

If you decide to sign-up let me know; I’ll meet in the ACU-4 parking lot at 7:30 and I’ll walk you though everything if you’d like. Just remember it’s only my 2nd autocross there and my third one ever.

Johnny,

Thanks. I will certainly take you up on the offer and should have my mind made up and schedule worked out by the end of the weekend. Is there sufficient parking for an RV? I'm thinking, if I want to bring a second vehicle anyway with a canopy, cooler, etc., why not just bring the RV...

poormxdad

JohnnyZoomNow

7th May 2010, 15:42

I don’t know about the RV. The paddock is large but with about 100 entrants it fills up. Some tow in their autocross car on a trailer and some tow a trailer for their race tires with their autocross car. I haven’t seen an RV in the paddock. In fact other than competing cars and tow vehicles, I’m not sure I’ve seen any cars in the paddock. Plenty of parking outside of the paddock area but I don’t know why you would want to hang out there. It is on a military base, you have to have DOD stickers and a military ID or be on the access list for the event. I don’t know if an RV would complicate things getting on and off base.

It might not be a problem but then again it might.

There is a sand dune overlooking the race area were family and spectators hang out, and competitors when not racing or working. The dune might be the best place to set up your canopy.

Folks,

Seriously considering autocross this weekend. Never done it in any car ever. My '90 Miata isn't perfect, HOWEVER, some dumba$$ backed into me a few months back and I have a new front nose with fresh paint. What does hitting a cone do to a Miata?

I gotta know.

poormxdad

JohnnyZoomNow

11th May 2010, 18:49

I did a novice clinic the day before my first event and hit several cones. I had some marks on the paint but they cleaned right off, I guess it was just dirt transfer from some of the cones. With fresh paint, marring might be an issue, I don’t know. You may want to ask again in the “Performance Driving” section of the forum; you will have a better chance of some experienced autocrossers speaking up.

TSCC does a novice clinic once a year. You do not need to wait for the next clinic to race. It’s fun and a lot of seat time, if you still qualify as a novice when they do next year’s class I’d think about taking it.

If you don’t have a DOD sticker on your car and a CAC, make sure you get added to the access list so you can get on base.

My car is easy to spot and I’ll meet you on the base in the parking lot right before you enter the autocross area at about 7:30 if you’d like.

Yes, I was one of the two grey GTOs -- #80. I was working the track when you were taking your runs. Whenever I had a free moment, you were not by your car. Hope to have the Miata ready by the next event. The control arms arrived this week.

Looks like that’s a negative. I lurk at the thread about Wacky Wednesdays on that more youthful local forum VA Driven http://www.vadriven.com/forums/ . It sounds like you guys have a lot of fun. Someday I’d like to get out there as a spectator; fear of damaging my car will keep me off this track for a long time.

Cool, see you there.

You may want to have someone about your size sit the car before or after your next adjustment, while the care is on the rack, to see how much it changes. Depending on your suspension, I suppose this change could be small enough to ignore but it could be a lot. Maybe you could offset your alignment by X amount to make up for the difference when no one is in the seat.

I sat in the car when we measured ride height. The changes in height without me in the car was very small, so I am not going to worry about it for running in autoX this week. I just did the alignment for a couple of guys running in Hyperfest at Summit this weekend. They got to sit in their cars while I did the work, which included corner weighting.

Maybe next month I will sit in my car while they do the alignment and corner weighting.

Hey guys, I've been doing a good amount of lurking over the past few years, but I'd be interested in doing an autocross. What is the TSCC event and how does it all work? When I was in high school I autocrossed my parents' '91NA and had a blast. Seems like all I did was show up, pay $25 and have a whole lot of fun. FWIW, I'm in Williamsburg and I have just finished getting a decent alignment on my NC after my good buddy and I did the Eibach pro-kit spring install. The car told me it's ready to be driven now.

Most of the posts are from Vbeach or Wmsbrg but there are two of us with two late model miatas on the middle peninsula (urbanna area) both "copper red" (what an oxymoronic color descriptioin). I've got an 06 hardtop and the other driver, a woman, has an 08 hardtop. (I'm new to Miata so I do not know the alphabet soup most posters use). Think there a few silver Miatas on the Northern Neck.

I would be interested in a road trip rally some day. Love the car except for it's taking water on the driver's side floor after heavy rains. Had it in to Hampton Miata 3x, taking it in again this weekend for some speciality shop water test. (sigh)

I'm another miata owner in the area. I definitely think we should get a gathering together. There is a classic/muscle car meet that happens at the Haygood shopping center every saturday at 5pm, it's a good venue that doesn't have the typical crowd that attracts unwanted attention. I will be out there tomorrow if anyone wants to stop by.

So there are a few Miata on the Northern Neck
I think the club “Miata Nuts of Greater Hampton Roads” takes a cruse that way once or twice a year. I’m a member but my schedule never seems to mesh well with the clubs schedule.

OCD,
How was the Jenros (Haygood) meet? I used to stop by fairly regularly but it’s been a few months since I’ve been out. Saturday 9/11 looks like the next time I may be able to make it out, maybe we can try for a good Miata turn out that day?

JohnnyZoomNow: I just realized you had mentioned Jenro's previously in the thread. I am up for a meet on 9/11, but I have yet to meet another miata owner in the area so far. The only other website I know of to generate interest is driven, but not sure the crowd it will draw.

I only stopped by for around 30 minutes on Saturday, but it was pretty decent. A lot of the usuals came out, but a few ones I have never seen.
Two worth mentioning was a lambo and an 06'ish viper.

I’m not sure I will be able make it to Jenro’s on 9/11, but I pretty sure 8/28 and 9/4 are out for me. I hope to make it out there regularly again starting this fall.

It would always be nice to have a good turn-out of Miatas. This thread is the best place I know to reach local Miata guys. Maybe we could pick one Saturday (2nd Saturday?) a month and ask Miata drivers to make a special effort to come out then.

There are usually a few Miatas at the Car’s and Coffee on the first Saturday of each Month. We could talk up the idea there a little.

I learned about VaDriven from a guy at Jenro’s. There are a few Miata drivers on-line there. I don’t see a problem with talking about Jenro’s on VaDriven. I suspect most of VaDriven already knows they’re welcome at Jenro’s but juvenile stupidity will not be tolerated. If you do post about it there, a reminder wouldn’t hurt.

Miatas make up a large number of entries in at the local autocross events. You don’t have to race to come out and say high but you will have to stop at the entrance and sign an insurance waver, to prove you knew racing was going on, before you get in.

You may want to post a list of the guys that are in on a site where you have unlimited time to edit the list as people add or drop out and post a link to the list here. I think VADriven is set up without a time limit to edit, other sites may do that too.

I just found out the speed limt for Skyline Dr in 35mph for 109 miles, what a buzzkill

Yep, and it’s federal property (National Park Service) so a ticket would be a bigger hassle than usual. I want to drive it, I never have and I’ve heard the views are awesome but I think it would be a very bad place for any spirited driving.

I will not be at Jenros this evening. If anyone from here goes, have fun, looks like a great evening for it.

I'm planning to go on the 25th, probably the 9th too.
Where's the best place to meet up 'round here? I was thinking the Kroger parking lot off I-564, just because it's close to the bridge.
What time, 10am?

The one at 205 E Little Creek Rd? It’s as good a place as any. 10 am sounds fine to me.

My brother is down from Pa this weekend, so I doubt I will be taking a cruise. I will be at Haygood however. Perhaps the cruise could end around 5pm with a meet at Jenro's?

I plan on leaving at 10am, so I sure hope we'll be back by 5pm

It would be fun to bring a line of Miatas to Jenro’s but like Southwade said, this cruise should wrap up too early for that. Not sure if I’m going to make it out to Jenro’s, I may be done for the day after the cruise, maybe though, I just don’t know.

Don’t forget there is more talk about this cruise in other threads, see post 112 for links. Here is a map of the proposed route http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=115139328506720169641.000490b1401b084582e87&t=h&z=10

Upcoming events:

Jenro’s Every Saturday Evening, starts at 5 PM
Five & Dime Miata Cruise – September 25
Sumospeed’s Yahtzee Cruise – September 25
Cars & Coffee Virginia Beach – October 2
ODR-SCCA autocross – October 3
Five & Dime Miata Cruise – October 9 (probably)
TSCC autocross – October 17

Terry,
Shoot me a PM. Depending on what time frame you are looking at, I can give you a hand.

I'm sure a few of these guys will vouch for my experience with Miatas. I have a garage with a lift in my back yard.

I encourage you to stick around and help out and learn about your car. I'm not a fan of the drop off, then pick up later. I enjoy supporting the enthusiast.

If your looking for a shop to just knock it out. I highly recommend all aspects (547-2888). Those guys race cars and understand the strive for performance.

I just moved right behind Bayside highschool, and saw a bunch of people around their a couple of times for some gatherings. Never seen any miatas. A lot of big trucks and mustangs? But anyways, I am 2 min away and looking to meet some people.

Let me know anything if you want. I would love to get a ride with that supercharger you got. My buddy Luke was just here yesterday with his 400 wheel hp mustang, but I didn't know anyone was going up there. Love to check it out and meet some folks.

If you don't mind traveling 30 miles to get northwest of Suffolk, there are literally 100's of miles of nearly zero traffic country roads with nothing but cotton and corn fields. Tons of twisties and some good elevation changes the further north you travel. I've propably driven over 10,000 miles on those back roads.

Last night was the first time I got together with them, I didn't want to invite others that weren't currently a member without checking with them first. A friend said it best when he described them in a pm:
"This is a very mature club. I’ve met one member in his twenties, the vast majority of the club is retired couples. Some, like me, are middle aged empty nesters or soon to be empty nesters. They are a nice, friendly, welcoming group. The club events seem to revolve around restaurants. There is a monthly club breakfast that rotates to various restaurants. From April to Nov the club tries to do a monthly group drive to a restaurant a couple of hours out for dinner. If this is what you are looking for, you will love it"

Join up at cars and coffe on Laskin Road. You can show up anytime between 0800 and 0930. Plan to depart for Suffolk between 0945-1000. Expect to be home NLT 1400 (2 PM). Its about 35 miles to Suffolk via I264/64/HWY58.

Looking for an inspection station in the area that doesnt mind modified vehicles. Need a sticker asap.

Took mine to Kramer in suffolk this past saturday. Dropped off my car at noon for new tires and inspection. They call me back 3 hours later saying my car is too low to get on the lift and inspect it. I notify them that I have wooden ramps in the passenger side of my car that will easily get it high enough to drive over the lift. They call me back 2 hours later telling me my car is ready for me. I get there and it has 4 new tires, and a rejection sticker.

I ask them what got rejected on my car, and they told me they just slapped the sticker on there because it was too low to get on the lift. They didnt even attempt to use the wooden ramps because they were "too busy"

3rd November 2010, 08:44

the only height requirement that i could find is that the bottom edge of the front bumper should be in a range of 14-22 inches but i don't think even a stock miata falls in that range. i believe there is a headlight height requirement but i didn't feel like searching the web that much. i know there are a couple of shops in the lynnhaven area that don't care but i haven't used them so i don't know the names. the only lowered car ive had was an old vw golf but it still wasn't as low as the miata. good luck.

Not sure where you can take it for a good sticker, but I know that you can report the shop to the state police. That is unacceptable. If they couldn't get the car up on their lift they should've used a jack.. how did they get the new tires on the vehicle???

Check out the pink slip that should've been put in your glovebox, and see what they failed it for. Take it to another shop and have it inspected. When it passes for whatever the other shop failed it for, contact the state police, per the verbiage on their site:

"If I feel that the inspection performed on my vehicle was not a proper inspection, what can I do?"
If you question the integrity of a safety inspection performed on your vehicle, you should contact the nearest State Police Safety Division Office. An investigation will be conducted per your request to determine if proper inspection procedures were followed."

only problem with that is we don't know just how low he is, there are regulations on height. plus in va anything other than stock is generally illeagel. so calling a trooper out to the station calls attention to his moddified car if the station checks out. and if he got it reinspected else where and passed it then files the complaint, tht now calls attention from the state to the passing shop, for passing a modified car. just find a place that will pass you and use them from now on and let the other one go. just my .02.

VAmazda

3rd November 2010, 09:40

Height restrictions in VA are to the bumper support bar (pretty much behind the front license plate there is a metal bar under your bumper cover. They measure to that.

concealer4O4

3rd November 2010, 11:13

It's pretty low, but still has 4 inches ground clearance in the middle of the car. Not sure bumper height, I will have to measure.

And about the not being able to pass a modified car? I've researched all the laws for what I can and can't have, and as long I meet the requirements, the car should pass.
I've had lengthy discussions before with inspectors and state troopers about my car. I've been pulled over plenty of times before for random stuff like light bulb being out, or exhaust too loud, or even tire wear being too worn out.....but a cop has never said anything to me about my car being too low (even while they sit on their knees basically to talk through my window)

The inspection station I went to never measured the car. I've even been told by people that work there, that if the car is lowered the inspector won't try much to pass it because he doesnt like lowered vehicles. The inspection sticker simply says "too low to inspect"

sidenote: they changed the tires one at a time with a jack.

speedymatt

3rd November 2010, 12:25

you should be ok with height then, and the inspector should have done the inspection when they had one of the front and one of the rears off as that is the minimum he has to check. anyway there are shops that will pass it, most will, just not the one you went to.

i assume that because you've been pulled for a loud exhaust that its modified, technically thats enough to fail it, but like i said most shops turn a blind eye. fwiw i took my lowered vw w/I/E and tint to the shell station at virginia beach and constitution in pembroke and it passed there.

I need to install a horn on my car to make the whole thing legitimatelly be good enough to get inspected, but I don't have the damn time lately. I've put about 5 grand into this car now in the past month and havnt been able to install anything but the torsen differential and the OEM muffler back on it.

3rd November 2010, 14:09

I don't think anyplace will pass the car without a horn installed. Once you get the car legal, any shop would probably happily inspect it even it your lowered to the limit of the law. There is a small independent shop at the corner of Indian River Rd and Reon Dr were I’ve been getting my cars inspected lately. It’s called Indian River Service Center or something like that.

If your asking, on a public forum, if anyone knows where you can buy an inspection sticker for a car that will not pass inspection. You may want to go ahead and ask who knows a good defense attorney too.

Um OK… I was trying to funny about it.

http://i54.tinypic.com/2nlwvih.jpg If a car can’t pass the VA safety inspection it probably shouldn’t be on the road. Get it fixed before you get yourself or someone else hurt or killed. Once the car is fixed the inspection is no problem.

Most of the time life’s better if you play by the rules instead of trying to find a way around them.

Looking good so far with Southwade (PM), OCD (PM), Johnnyzoom and fastredrat.
Join up at cars and coffe on Laskin Road. You can show up anytime between 0800 and 0930. Plan to depart for Suffolk between 0945-1000. Expect to be home NLT 1400 (2 PM). Its about 35 miles to Suffolk via I264/64/HWY58.
From their we hit the rural country roads and pop out in Wakefield on HWY 460.
Come with a full tank of gas. I usually refuel in Windsor on 460 on the way back.

Weather forecast is looking good - 54 deg - bright and sunny but cool. My supercharger and 6AT love the cool temps, tires ummh well. I'm looking foward to a great day. If you have a GPS I would recommend it. It can provide great heads up display for the tight curves as well as heads up for straight aways if passing is required. Reminder to come with a full tank of gas and check your tire pressure due to the cooler temps.

For those that can not make it this weekend, I drive almost every weekend. Send me a PM for a make up run.

What is the interest in a Thankgiving weekend drive? Fri. Sat, or Sun??
I have 2 North Carolina routes as well as a Pungo, Back Bay, Blackwater, Knots island route. Any other route suggestions are more then welcome

it really aggravates me when i hear about inspection stations failing people for whatever they feel like, we have a manual that is 1.5-2" thick telling us what is inspectable and at what limit it will fail. being too low isnt on there (if the tires can contact any part of the body though, that fails) +1 on the let it go if you find a station that will pass your car as im pretty sure i wouldn't because if you complain you'll have to take your car to the station that failed you and a state trooper(well versed in inspection laws), the inspector, and you will be going over your car and its just a big sh*tstorm for all partys involved and i can guess an inspection station that will never inspect you again. then you get to find another that will knowingly scrape your rejection off and but a bad sticker on

I am up for just about any weekend.

As for Saturday, the cool temps will be very welcome. The warmer weather wreaked havok on my underhood temps. The rotrex doesn't like high temps any more than an eaton based.

I need to get my hands on a wideband and gauge cheap so I can start fiddling. I've seen some unique rotrex related mods that could tide me over until KW decides to show the miatas some love. :jump:

+1 on bad inspection stations and it’s good to know there is no “too low” limit. Hopefully the car in question has no tire clearance issues.

An inspector that fails cars based on what he personally doesn’t like is totally unacceptable. He doesn’t have the authority to make his own requirements; his job is only to see if the car meets the states minimum safety standards. I’m sure honest mistakes happen when you have to try to remember and interpret a manual that thick. It’s probably written in legalese to complicate things even more.

I was thinking the owner of the car in question had been wronged until he mentioned that he needed to install a horn in the car to make it legal and seemed to be looking for a way around doing it. Maybe it was a bad inspector and he never even noticed the horn but if you ask for a state inspection knowing your car doesn’t have a working horn shouldn’t you expect a rejection sticker? Then again maybe he didn’t know the horn was bad when he took it in.

Just out of curiosity, does the law say you have to go back to the same station for the re-inspection after a rejection? Years ago I failed an inspection for a light bulb and he asked for some ridiculous amount to replace it. I told him to put a rejection sticker on it, went straight to an auto parts store for a bulb and installed it, then when to a different inspection station. I had to pay full price for the re-inspection because I didn’t go back to the same place but I don’t recall any problems having the re-inspection done at a different shop.

johnny, you can go to any inspection station you like, if you go to the same one you got rejected at within 15 days including the date of the inspection they can only re-inspect the items they failed you for and charge you a dollar, if you go to another station they have to 100% reinspect and charge you $16 but if thy fail you for something different they cannot write you another rejection the rule is 1 rejection per car period. after 15 days the original station will have to fully charge again unless they want to give it to you for free

concealer4O4

4th November 2010, 10:50

Okay, well my car was never even checked during rejection. Only thing missing right now is the horn (which has been ordered). They simply slapped the rejection sticker on it without even checking it.

BUT if what you are saying is true in regards that they only check what got rejected, wouldn't my car pass if I just raised it for the trip to the inspection station, without them fully inspecting the rest of it? I'm kind of confused and I'm not TRYING to find a way around the system....I just really need my car this weekend since my DD is eating a quart of oil every 2 days and probably will blow up on me any time

potentialmuscle87

4th November 2010, 11:11

technically if you have a rejection sticker on your windshield and the only thing noted on it is that you're too low for inspection and you take it back high enough to do the inspection then yeah, you can only be failed for it. take pictures and call the trooper if they try to reject again

pictures of the sticker noting the reason for rejection high enough quality that a trooper can read it

as a side note, i doubt their official inspection bay as prescried by the state police even has a lift in it, lifts are not required to do an inspection. when i got my license i had to get signed off by a trooper doing a faux inspection with a jack to take off 2 wheels in our inspection bay

potentialmuscle87

4th November 2010, 11:19

a station will probably try to lie to the trooper after they put your new rejection on which isnt allowed and say it was the first inspection and you're lieing.... so make your case have your records reciepts pictures and everything ready for when the trooper makes his decision. i dont know who the inspector in your area is but the number for chesapeake area is (757) 925-2432

this should be true but isn't, on my vw i was rejected for something and took it for a re-inspect that required it to be up on the lift. while under there the inspector noticed that the tires had chorded in one spot due to camber wear. he signed off on what it failed for but i still had to get tires and get it checked again. the inspector can also claim that the inspection was stopped once it failed for the first thing checked and fail it for what ever else.

back on point. it looks like i'll be able to go to the cars and coffee but not the drive so i should see some of you out there.

potentialmuscle87

Matt, that was an improper inspection then. i know it happens but it isnt correct, the 1st time the car has to be inspected entirely 100% otherwise what is to keep an inspector from "noticing" something new every time you came in. it is that way so that if something was borderline on the original inspection that it doesnt fail because now 2 weeks later it is bad even though when it was inspected it was okay. it is set up so that per the original inspection everything that was bad then is now in compliance

i agree, thats the way it should happen but with moified cars the inspector has you by the short and curlys and knows full well what is legal and what isn't. if i fought the camber wear then my "not oem" exhaust, clear lenses and tint would have been subject to trooper inspection. is it right, no, but like you said its more of a pain to fight it then just find a new shop or comply.

Unfortunately, I do not have any walkie-talkies.

I just fear it handles like a mustang. I had a 00 GT. It was a really fun car with 4.10 gears. Quick it was on the straights, but downright frightening when you actually had to turn the wheel. 400whp and possibly worse handling ability, due to the drag package, might be a recipe for disaster while pushing it on curvy roads...especially if he is a competitive person.

As for me, I just want a fun, spirited drive. If he can play nice with 'slower' cars, I am all for it. Of course getting distanced by cars with less than 200 whp might weigh on the ego of most!

From VIR’s web site:
“Don't forget Holiday Laps to benefit the Salvation Army coming up this Friday, November 12th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with last group taking the track at 3:30.

The cost is $25 per session with each session lasting 20-25 minutes. Donations of $25 in cash, unwrapped toys or non-perishable food items will be accepted.”

The normal roll bar rule probably will not apply for this event; another Miata.net-er is trying to get confirmation. It would be very disappointing to make the drive out to VIR and find out they are enforcing the role bar rule, but if it’s confirmed we will be OK, I plan to go. Speedymatt: If you want to powder coat anything to 'dress' it up, let me know. Of course race cars aren't supposed to be pretty!

we definitely need a sticker or something that pops Mid-A-Miatas hell the suby guys on NASIOC have Mid-A stickers on there rides.

the exhaust looks great btw. now just get that cooler and turn up the boost.

i might just have to take you up on the powder, my plan though is suspension, wheels/tires, engine/show parts.

Thanks!

All I have is a conventional electric oven, so whatever I do has to be able to fit in there. I can get you the dimensions if you need. Just have the part blasted, my compressor is too small to do much other than spot blasting. I use Eastwood powders so let me know what color you want, or you can bring it when we do the parts.

Hello all,
Got a call from the dealership today about my Miata. Turns out the issue is the PCM. Should have it fixed (under their 1 year parts warranty, thankfully for my wallet) next week. Hooray! So I'll be ready for the next group cruise soon! :)
