Numerous applications involve the use of composite material in order to increase the ratio between strength and weight and in order to increase the flexibility of the design. There is an intensive use of this material also in naval building, principally for recreational boat. Experimental and numerical tests allow having a deep knowledge of the response of this kind of material in different load conditions. In order to accommodate the complexity of the design, usually it is necessary to use bonding for jointing different elements. The work deals with a series of experimental tests for the assessment of the head joint between two carbon laminates. Tests carried out with different angles between the two linked elements in order to evaluate the response of the bonding to different stresses direction. The requirements for repair work on Naval aircraft composite wing skins that can be performed under depot conditions (or still worse, under field conditions) are quite restrictive. Equipment that can be used is rather limited as are the available repair space and time. The procedures must be simple enough so that they can be performed satisfactorily by personnel without special knowledge in composite materials technology. Repairs of small holes should not require more than perhaps a short predrying cycle (with heat guns) and a subsequent patch bonding using a heating blanket, held in place by applying a vacuum. However, it has been observed during simulated experimental repair work that the glue lines frequently show a high content of pores and bubbles which are attributed to evaporation of moisture during the curing cycle. Because of the extensive costs associated with building composite laminates, the U.S. Army is exploring approaches to reduce the processing steps associated with hybridized structures. One area of focus is in surface preparation for secondary bonding. An important quality of an effective surface preparation method is its ability to consistently provide clean and highly chemically active substrates for bonding. In this report, we examine peel ply surface preparation methods for secondary bonding of composite substrates using FM 94K epoxy film adhesive by mechanical testing, elemental surface analysis, and high-resolution imaging of failure surfaces. Woven S2 fiberglass infused with SC-15-toughened epoxy resin composite laminates was fabricated by the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding process. Shear bond strength of composite resin to high performance polymer PEKK according to surface treatments and bonding materials

The object of the present study was to evaluate the shear bonding strength of composite to PEKK by applying several methods of surface treatment associated with various bonding materials. One hundred and fifty PEKK specimens were assigned randomly to fifteen groups (n = 10) with the combination of three different surface treatments (95% sulfuric acid etching, airborne abrasion with 50 µm alumina, and airborne abrasion with 110 µm silica-coating alumina) and five different bonding materials (Luxatemp Glaze & Bond, Visio.link, All-Bond Universal, Single Bond Universal, and Monobond Plus with Heliobond). After surface treatment, surface roughness and contact angles were examined. Topography modifications after surface treatment were assessed with scanning electron microscopy.
