How do I know if my lawn mower pulley is bad? ›

Free Spinning Pulley – Spin the pulley with your fingers. Does it spin more than 1-2 revolutions? If it does, the cause is a lack of grease in the bearing, a sign it will fail soon. Seized Bearings – An indication that the pulley will lock up.

What year was my equipment built? The 5th character of our 11 character product serial numbers will indicate the last number of the year that it was manufactured. Since 5th character in the example is a 4, the year of manufacture would be a year ending in 4.

One of the common bad idler pulley symptoms is when the engine belts start producing a squealing sound. When the pulley seizes, or the surface is worn-out, then there is a squealing noise as the engine belt rubs against its surface, due to the absence of enough motion from the pulley, a squealing sound is produced.

The squealing sound is typically caused by the pulley bearings wearing out, leading to friction between the moving parts. Another symptom to watch for is vibrations coming from the area around the tensioner pulley. These vibrations can be felt through the steering wheel or the vehicle's chassis.

The most common reasons for this condition are: Belt incorrectly installed. The use of an incorrect, worn out or damaged drive belt. Loose, damaged, or mis-aligned belt pulleys.

The biggest cause of belts flying off of a mower deck is that the customer does not know that you MUST engage the mower with the engine running at FULL THROTTLE. Engaging the mower at anything less than full throttle can throw the belt off. The next thing that will cause this is an IDLER pulley beating that is dry.

The belt tension is set with a spring and an eyebolt. Tighten or shorten the eyebolt to increase belt tension or loosen or lengthen the bolt to relieve tension. The correct tension is achieved when pressure is applied to the center of the longest run and belt is able to be pressed in about ½” from static position.

To determine the tension in a pulley system, you need to consider the forces acting on the object being lifted or moved. The tension in the rope is equal to the sum of these forces. For example, consider a simple pulley system with a single pulley, as shown in the first diagram in the section above.

The pulley should be loose enough that you can push it to the right a bit.

Excessive or uneven wear and deterioration of the lagging. Noticeable deflection or noise coming from the pulley. Visible cracks on the shaft, especially near a drive coupling or any changes in shaft diameter. Damage to locking assembly bolts.

If the idler pulley fails completely, the serpentine belt will likely come off, causing the engine-driven accessories (i.e., alternator, air conditioning compressor, etc.) to stop working.
